Which Jobs are Most Secure in 2023?

When looking at responses to surveys about the workplace, there has been a sharp rise in those who are saying that jobs with the most security are a high priority. With the covid-19 pandemic now mostly behind us, a lot of focus is turning from working remotely to finding jobs that are still going to be here in a year or two.
In the technology industry especially, there seems to be a real level of panic about the implications of the improvements that have been seen recently in artificial intelligence programs. Some software developers and content writers in particular seem to believe that it may herald the end of their jobs as we know them.
While these can be dismissed as overly pessimistic takes on what AI could mean for different categories of employment, it is still worth remembering that these fears are real and may mean that there is a shift coming which will lead away from the study of software development for new people who are considering entering the field.
So, which are the most secure jobs in the UK in 2023, and how steep is the difficulty level when it comes to winning them?
The Most Secure Jobs in 2023
Chief Executive or C-Suite Executive
This is the level than most people working for a company will aspire to get to one day but very few will succeed. The salary that can be commanded by a CEO or other C-suite executive, such as Chief Financial Officer or Chief Operating Officer can be immense and can come with many contractual benefits such as bonuses and share options.
The C-positions at any company are coveted roles and are often given to founders and people who have been there since the early part of the company’s existence. There is more of a turnover amongst charity Chief Executives than those in the private sector. Having said that, they are also generally paid a lot less as well and will often lack the extras, bonuses and perks that a private sector post at this level will.
It can be very difficult to dislodge someone from one of these positions unless they choose to leave on their own terms, short of proving some very serious wrongdoing on their part. For this reason, they are considered one of the most secure jobs in the UK in 2023.
Politicians
Although a term as an MP is only for five years, that is still a degree of job security beyond what most people are able to be sure of. Five years in a well-paid job with travel expenses and money for a second home while they are in Westminster has seen many MPs settle down and feel quite untouchable in their positions.
In the normal course of politics there are relatively few seats swapped between the main parties at a General Election and this means that for many MPs, being selected by a “safe” constituency can effectively be considered a job for life. There are some areas who always vote Conservative and some who always vote Labour and the seats that are considered to be safe very seldom change hands.
Having said that, there is pressure for a new general election after having had an unprecedented number of Prime Ministers in a single year without an election. Those calling for an election believe that they will oust the Conservatives in a landslide, and opinion polls are adding further fuel to this belief. They appear to show the Conservatives potentially behind even the Scottish National Party in terms of seats (who only contest seats in Scotland), if a general election were to be held tomorrow.
Nurses and Healthcare Workers
The NHS across the UK is under the most pressure that it has experienced in decades and this is in no small measure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The NHS workers were the first line, and they dealt with many people presenting with symptoms, and invariably caught it themselves, meaning that they had to take time off work. This has meant that there has been a constant lack of staff as there will almost always be someone off work so that they don’t pass it onto their patients.
The pandemic has really laid bare the staffing shortages, particularly in England and Wales, but to a lesser extent in Scotland as well. This does, however, mean that for those who want to train as health and social care workers, there will be a great many opportunities to step into and there may be greater opportunities for career progression than ever before. Even if the NHS ends up becoming privatised, having training in nursing will still stand you in good stead when it comes to finding a job. For this reason nursing and healthcare is considered an extremely secure job.
Education and Childcare
Jobs in education and childcare help the entire economy to function. Having children in school being taught by qualified teachers and classroom assistants allows their parents to go out to work without having to worry about their welfare all the while. Children in school are taught many valuable skills that they will use in later life when they go on to their post high school destination, whether further or higher education or work. Teachers are the backbone of the schools and their work makes a real difference to young people’s lives.
Early years childcare is the other profession that makes a real difference to parents, between them being able to work successfully at home and not. Some people wondered if having parents working from home would see the childcare sector taking a hit but if you have spoken to any parents who have been working from home, having their children around is not conducive to a great working environment. There is definitely nothing for the childcare sector to worry about in the near future. Hard-working parents need to be able to get their work done and early years childcare is still an excellent solution, and career choice.
